It is common to think of globalization as exposing local communities to uncontrollable pressures from the international economy. Globalization also means that local communities have new ways to collaborate with other communities around the planet. Central Indiana is the hub of hundreds of important partnerships with local groups. Considered as a whole, these nongovernmental approaches are redefining the way we think about foreign aid, international economic development, education, arts and culture … but from the perspective of authorities in DC or New York, these particular local-to-local partnerships are mostly too small to be noticed. Thus they have not been the focus of very much research. Provocate proposes to change this situation by using Central indiana and its global linkages as a source of unique first-hand empirical data.
