Some day, perhaps soon, a democratic Burma will bear the faint stamp: “Made in Indiana.” Burmese dissidents and constitutional scholars are drafting a new constitution in Bloomington. Ties between the state and crisis-ridden Burma will intensify if things turn badly, too: Indianapolis is the major destination for refugees from Burma, and we will get a lot more if the goons in Rangoon respond as brutally as they have in the past. In 1942, a group of students at the University of Munich calling themselves “The White Rose” decided to protest the atrocities of the Nazi regime and to advocate that Germany lose the war as the only way to get rid of Hitler. They did so non-violently, by publishing and distributing pamphlets throughout Germany and Austria. They were apprehended and executed in 1943. All we know of the arresting officer is that at the last moment he tried to save their lives. Spotlight Players, a community theatre based in Beech Grove, commemorates this story. (more…)

Since 1998 a brutal war has been raging in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC). Over 4 million people have died. And there are the uncountable casualties: the many tens of thousands of women and girls who have been systematically kidnapped, raped, mutilated and tortured by soldiers from both foreign militias and the Congolese army. For the first time, they tell their stories. (more…)

The process whereby these words are translated into a series of images is deeply creative as well as technically challenging.
