July 15-17 - “Off the Streets”

Tuesday, July 15th, 2008

Who could put together a better play on homelessness than the homeless? That’s why the cast of “Misfortunes,” a play concerning fortune cookies, includes homeless people who know what it’s like to be in the roles they’re playing onstage.

The professional theatre troupe calling themselves “Off the Streets” is made up of people who are or have been homeless, plus a couple kids from Zionsville, and will perform on Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday at 7:00.The Peace House’s new favorite venue, Lockerbie Central UMC, is once again hosting this social-justice-promoting event.

Check out the Off the Streets website.

Read Nuvo’s blurb about this group and learn how someone formerly drafted into the NBA got involved.

Showing at Lockerbie United Methodist Church, 237 N. East St. $10 admission.

July 16 - Divine Action: Living Like You Mean It with Julia Butterfly Hill and Seane Corn

Tuesday, July 8th, 2008

Julia Butterfly Hill says that one’s purpose is not what one is called to do, but what one is called to be. She is a well-known activist who made herself famous sitting in the branches of a redwood tree for upwards of two years. Seane Corn is a New Jersey native who shows people how to use the practice of Yoga to pull through life’s rough spots. In tandem, they are a testament to the power of living like you mean it.

“Sentiment without action is the ruin of the soul.” So goes the aphorism. You can become what you’re called to be without Julia and Seane, but they’ll definitely give you some good ideas for how to do it.

July 7 - Discover Your Inner Sage

Wednesday, July 2nd, 2008

I once had a friend who seemed wise beyond his years. It’s no accident that his middle name was Sage, which is a word meaning “a mature or venerable man of sound judgment or wisdom.”

Aging in our culture means less and less “mature” and more and more “senile.” But being over the hill is no reason to reserve your spot in a local assisted living community. There’s actually an organization, United Senior Action of Indiana, that helps people share their inner wisdom once they’re no longer sagacious 18-year-olds.

So how does one go about acquiring the skill of sharing inner wisdom?

“From Age-ing to Sage-ing: A Profound New Vision of Growing Older” on Monday, July 7, 7-8:30 pm, in Room E213 at St. Luke’s United Methodist Church, 100 W. 86th St., of course!

This is the third one in a series of four free workshops. Focus ranges from “claiming your elder voice” to “service to future generations.” A great way to invest in your inner guru.

For more info, contact Paul Severance (317) 788-7795 or pseverance1@comcast.net.

To register, call (317) 846-3404, ext. 367, or email morand@stlukesumc.com.

And if you liked this event, check out the next one on July 14th.
