“Golda’s Balcony” is an affectionate portrait of the larger-than-life Israeli Prime Minister Golda Meir, a complex one-woman play, takes a dramatic look at history, idealism and power. In connection with the performance by the Civic Theatre, Middle East expert Pierre Atlas will give a talk about Golda Meir.

More than 700 years ago, when Osman Gazi established the Ottoman Empire, he also established the Mehter band to inspire his troops when they went into battle. Mozart, Haydn, Bizet and other Western composers used the sounds of the booming kös drum and oboe-like zurna. And “the First Military Band in the World, Turkish Military Band Mehter Takimi” will be in Indianapolis.

An amazing story about the U.S. Cold War era pilots who participated in an airlift (including candy for the kids) to help the blockaded West Germans survive after coming under Soviet control. Author Andrei Cherny was the youngest person ever to be a White House speechwriter.

American art educator and professional comedy writer Maureen Kushner traveled across Israel helping children move beyond fear by creating paintings about peace. The artworks by Jewish, Arab, Bedouin and Druze children are now featured in a traveling exhibit. Hear Ms. Kushner share stories about her journey and the inspiring vision of the children. The exhibit will be on display at the Arthur M. Glick JCC through December. Schools and youth groups are encouraged to bring students to view the paintings.

Congo Week is a global initiative led by students to raise awareness about the situation in the Congo and provide support to the people of the Congo. It will occur from October 19 - 25, 2008 on campuses and in communities throughout the globe from Brazil to Belgium, South Africa to Sweden, Kenya to Korea and in many other locations. Indiana could be a major focal point, and you can be part.

As Secretary of State, Albright reinforced America’s alliances, advocated democracy and human rights, and promoted American trade and business, labor, and environmental standards abroad. Albright is the chairperson for The Women, Faith and Development Alliance, which aims to end global poverty among women.
