“The Story of Stuff,” a 20-minute video that covers environmental, psychological and social impacts of our consumption oriented society, will be shown on Wed. Henry Louis Gates Jr. is one of the few American scholars who can match the breadth of expertise and the passionate commitment to justice of W.E.B. Du Bois. That must be why he is the Director of W. E. B. Du Bois Institute for African and African American Research at Harvard. In fact, his career parallels that of Du Bois in many ways, including efforts by both to create comprehensive encyclopedia of Africans and African Diaspora. We’ve come a long way since the xenophobic anxieties in the 1980s about Japan’s economic threat to America. Now Indiana communities that saw Japan as a threat are scrambling over themselves to attract Japanese investment … and the Japan American Society of Indiana is part of the reason why attitudes have shifted in the past 20 years. We assume that immigrants coming to the US with and without proper authorization are blessings to their home countirs: after all, remittances are one of the main sources of foreign exchange for Mexico and most Central American countries. But a closer look at villages and towns that now have almost no one of working age, that have most of their kids growing up in families whose parents are working up North … the blessing is mixed.
