The Indianapolis Committee on Foreign Relations bring to town Melvin Goodman, retired CIA Division Chief. Goodman has been a Senior Fellow and Director at the National Security Program at the Center for International Policy since 1995. His tenure at the Central Intelligence Agency lasted from 1966-90, ending as Division Chief and Senior Analyst at the office of Soviet Affairs. From 1974-76 he held a similar position at the Department of State in the Bureau of Intelligence and Research. From 1986-2004 he was Professor of International Relations at the National War College. Mel has authored many books. They include: The Phantom Defense, America’s Pursuit of the Star Wars Illusion and Bush League Diplomacy: How the neoconservatives are Putting the World at Risk (2004). He co-authored The Wars of Edvard Shevardnadze (2nd edition, 2001). His op-ed pieces appear in the NYT, CSM, WP, Baltimore Sun and the San Diego Union-Tribune. Broadcast appearances include CNN, NBC, PBS, BBC, CBC, NPR, CBS, MacNeil-Lehrer’s Newshour, Discovery Channel and Ted Koppel’s Nightline.
