October 16-17 — National Association of Social Workers of Indiana statewide conference and job fair

It may be for social work professionals, but the topics of workshops and discussions are of urgent concern to all of us.

When: Thursday October 16, through Friday October 17 (all day)

Where: Marriott East 7202 East 21st Street Indianapolis, IN 46219

This conference is for professional social workers talking and working with other professional social workers. Provocate is intrigued by several of the workshops, including:

  • War Head: Survivorship and Coping with the Psychological Toll of the War - Lessons Learned From Operation Iraqi Freedom. The perspective of military mental health professionals in the wartime theater will be presented within the context of a comprehensive overview of universal survival strategies and those “lines of attack” that allow for coping with the most adverse of life circumstances, as well as those that promote adaptation and adjustment to life on the home front following redeployment. Additionally, it is critical to understand that the ultimate saving grace involves those to whom one bears one’s soul and for whom one would gladly make the ultimate sacrifice and lay down one’s life. Participants will therefore be exposed, through visual learning and discussion, to firsthand, personal experiences illustrating what allows the individual to derive extraordinary meaning and purpose in committing to one another in times of unequalled adversity; a lesson learned most poignantly and painfully in combat and catastrophic life circumstances. Those factors that enable human beings to triumph over tragedy and generate growth through trauma will be addressed, as well as the nature of interpersonal relationships that permit such occurrences.
  • Mental Health Leadership Development in the Latino Community. The development of mental health leadership is a responsibility that warrants focused and systematic thought. The future leaders of the mental health sector need to be developed and tapping into the inherent strengths immigrants possess brings a unique opportunity for cultural bridging. Effective strategies to developing mental health leadership will be presented.
  • The Nexus Between the Iraq War and Katrina Recovery: Clinical Dynamics and Policy Issues. This workshop offers a survivor’s perspective on both war and Hurricane Katrina, video footage post-Katrina and in Iraq, the major difference between and numerous parallel clinical dynamics and converging policy issues related to the Iraq War and Katrina recovery, including ten compelling mutual myths and realities and potential positive outcomes.
