October 10 — “The Impact of EU Water Policy on Newer Member States”
The European Union is widely praised for its progressive policies for the management and protection of water resources. Some of those policies, such as those for the management of river basins, require the EU member countries to have river basin agencies and plans in place on rather short deadlines. These requirements, along with the enticement of EU membership itself, have had profound effects on the newest member countries. [Provocate notes: This will probably be more interesting than it sounds.]
When: Friday, October 10, 2008, 4:30 pm - 5:30 pm
Where: IUPUI, room to be announced.
Presented by the 2008-2009 Sabbatical Speaker Series and William Blomquist, Dean, IU School of Liberal Arts at IUPUI and Professor of Political Science. The presentation compares the effects of these EU water policies on older member countries (specifically Italy, France, and Spain) with newer member countries (Poland, Bulgaria, and Romania).
Bill Blomquist’s primary research focus has been on water problems and policies in the western United States. His publications include Dividing the Waters (1992) and Common Waters, Diverging Streams (2004). His current research focuses on the management of watersheds and river basins in the U.S. and other countries.
And for your listening pleasure …
