October 3 — “Global Challenges and Changes in Leadership in the United States and Europe”

Rarely have relations between Europe and the US been so strained, rarely has trans-Atlantic cooperation been so important. Will it change with a new President? What if it doesn’t? A German insider shares his perspectives.

When: Friday, October 3, 8:15 – 9:30 a.m.

Where: Independent Colleges of Indiana, Inc. 3135 North Meridian Street, Indianapolis, IN 46208

The Indianapolis Eric M. Warburg Chapter of the American Council on Germany, the Indianapolis/Cologne Sister City Committee, and Independent Colleges of Indiana cordially invite everyone in Indy to a Discussion and Breakfast on the “German Unity Day” with Dr. Werner Hoyer [Member of the Bundestag (FDP)].

This event is free of charge. Seating is limited. To attend, please RSVP to Linda@icindiana.org (317-236-6090, ext. 221).

His appearance is one of the events during the German-American Weekend celebration in Indianapolis that includes a visit by a delegation from Cologne, Germany, the Taste of Germany on 4 October and German-American Day at the Indianapolis City Market.

Dr. Werner Hoyer has been a Member of the German Bundestag since 1987. He has served as Minister of State in the German Foreign Ministry, General Secretary of the Free Democratic Party (FDP), and Whip of the FDP Parliamentary Group. He has been on the National Executive Committee since 1997. Since 2002, Dr. Hoyer has served as Deputy Chairman and spokesman on foreign affairs of the FDP parliamentary group.

Dr. Hoyer has been a member of the FDP since 1972. A native of North Rhine-Westphalia, he currently serves as Chairman of the FDP Cologne Executive Board and, since 1984, has been a member of the Executive Committee of the FDP in North Rhine-Westphalia.

Why does Provocate think you should attend this event?
For more than a decade Hoyer has been a major force in trans-Atlantic relations. He is often the first politician that German journalists call for interpretations of US developments. As interesting as hearing from Hoyer will be the chance to meet the active and bright community of Hoosiers who care about European relations.

If you think this sounds interesting, be sure to check out …
Later in the month, October 15, discuss how the US needs to enlist the cooperation of Germany and other European powers to manage the rise of new and unpredictable global powers. Other German discussions about the troublesome pre-WWII German Diaspora on November 14, and German foundations on October 9 should be good.

And for your listening pleasure …

Advanced Chemistry is a good band for German Unity Day. It is considered the first group to adopt hip-hop as a way of addressing concerns of the new German immigrant population, and the first to bridge young audiences from East and West.
