September 26 — Lee Hamilton shares his “Thoughts on American Foreign Policy”
The US seems in deperate need of a balanbced, responsible, grown-up foreign policy. No one articulates this sort of policy better than America’s greatest living former Congressman, Lee Hamilton.
When: Wednesday September 26, 7:00 PM
Where: Marian College, Civic Theatre 3200 Cold Spring Rd, Indianapolis, IN
Free and open to the public, but registration is required.
Marian College’s fine Franciscan Center for Global Studies presents Lee Hamilton, from 1965 to 1999 U.S. Representative from Indiana. He served as chairman and ranking member of the House Committee on Foreign Affairs and he chaired the Subcommittee on Europe and the Middle East, the Permanent Select Committee on Intelligence, and numerous other House committees. In 2006, Hamilton was co-chair of the Iraq Study Group, a forward looking, bi-partisan assessment of the situation in Iraq. He served as vice-chair of the 9/11 Commission and co-chair of the 9/11 Public Discourse Project, established to monitor implementation of the Commission’s recommendations.
Hamilton is currently a member of the President’s Foreign Intelligence Advisory Board and the President’s Homeland Security Advisory Council, and he serves on the advisory boards of several government agencies on national security matters. Lee Hamilton is president and director of the Woodrow Wilson International Center for Scholars and director of The Center on Congress at Indiana University.
Mr. Hamilton is a graduate of DePauw University and Indiana University law school, and he studied for a year at Goethe University in Germany. Before his election to Congress, he practiced law in Chicago, Illinois and Columbus, Indiana. Lee and his wife, the former Nancy Ann Nelson, have three children and five grandchildren.
If this event sounds interesting … then chances are you’ll want to attend most of the foreign policy related events around town this fall. Hamilton’s strongest reconnedation from the 9/11 report was for a renewed emphasis on public diplomacy. This fall you’ll have many opportunities to participate in exercises in something different, “citizen diplomacy.” The People’s Foreign Policy Summit September 22 will be a good place to start learning about this.
