September 12 — Exporting the Soul of Dixie: Billy Graham and the Expansion of Southern Culture

Billy Graham is one of the most important figures in post WWII American civil religion … in ways that might seem unexpected (even to the Rev Graham himself).

When: Friday September 12, 10:00 AM

Where: IUPUI Campus Center room 309

Presented by IUPUI’s Center for the Study of Religion and American Culture

Lecture by Grant Wacker, Professor of Christian History; Director of Graduate Studies in Religion at Duke Divinity School

Grant Wacker, a well-known expert in American religion, joined the Divinity School faculty after teaching in the Department of Religious Studies at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill from 1977–1992. Wacker is also currently the Director of Graduate Studies for the Ph.D. in the Department of Religion at Duke University.

Professor Wacker is the co-editor or author of six books, including “Heaven Below: Early Pentecostals and American Culture.” He is working on an interpretive survey of religion in United States history with Randall Balmer and Harry S. Stout, to be published by Oxford University Press, and a cultural biography to be titled “Billy Graham: American Icon”

Professor Wacker, who is president of the American Society of Church History, has served as a senior editor of the quarterly journal, Church History: Studies in Christianity and Culture. He is a lay member of Orange United Methodist Church in Chapel Hill

Why does Provocate think you should attend this event?
Besides the fact that “Grant Wacker” is the best name Provocate has heard all day? More than many Americans realize, Billy Graham was a figure who towered above just Evangelical Christianity. As Evangelicals rethink the reflexive positions on many social issues that were defined by politician-preachers such as Jerry Falwell and Pat Robertson, they are in fact retracing a path Billy Graham stumbled down some half century ago.

If you think this sounds interesting, be sure to check out …
Former preacher John Loftus is an anti-Graham September 14.

The Soul Converters’ might not be a version of “Just As I Am” that Rev. Graham would have used … but it works better for stirring the soul. And listen to the music that was Billy Graham’s voice!
