September 27 — Development and Desire: A Talk by Witold Rybczynski
Witold Rybczynski may be the profound and influential thinker about the implications urban life and suburbia in American intellectual history. Who would be better for providing a context for the IMA’s challenging exhibition SuburbanNation?
When: Thursday September 27 7:00 PM
Where: IMA DeBoest Lecture Hall
Free and open to the public
Architect, professor and author Witold Rybczynski discusses his latest book, Last Harvest: How a Cornfield Became New Daleville. He looks at how our longing for “community” and “small town life” is embodied in these planned neighborhoods by exploring the design, construction and marketing of a subdivision. Rybczynski helps us consider what we really want when we buy a piece of the American dream in the form of a new house. After the talk, visit the Forefront exhibition SuburbanNation, featuring work by artist Emily Kennerk. Cosponsored by the IMA Contemporary Art Society and the Ball State College of Architecture and Planning: Indianapolis Center.
If this event sounds interesting, check out … Bill McKibben and others explore the implications of changing the way of living that Rybczynski analyzes at DePauw’s Discourse on Sustainability and Global Citizenship October 4-6. Similar themes will be addressed by David Hoppe in “To Be or Not – A 21st Century Question for Indianapolis” October 3 and Brian Payne in “Culture, Connectivity and QUality of Life” October 24.
