September 6 — “Ken-Ya Help Us?” fundraising carnival
Maybe a carnival can save the world, or at least a part of it. The “Ken-Ya Help Us?” Project is a youth-led working committee of the Global Interfaith Partnership (GIP), which has been working in Kenya. The Carnival is the kids’ first event to bring churches, synagogues, and schools together to raise awareness and money for orphans and vulnerable children in Western Kenya.
When: Saturday, September 6 2:00-6:00 PM
Where: Second Presbyterian Church, 7700 N. Meridian Street Indianapolis
So what’s going to happen at this carnival? Here’s what the organizers say:
Human Bowling, Dunk Tank, Moonwalks, Bungee Trampoline, Adrenaline Rush Obstacle Course, Rock Climbing Wall, Bungie Run, Face Painting, Craft Tent, Carnival Games galore, and a special “Kiddie Land” for little ones are just a few of the activities of the Kenya Carnival! Not only will it be a fun inter-generational community-wide event, but it will raise money for families in rural Kenya as part of the Global Interfaith Partnership “Umoja Project”. Second Presbyterian Church is the host of the Kenya Carnival which is sponsored by an inter-faith community of kids from local churches, synagogues, and schools throughout Indianapolis.
You might ask: How come? The answer:
Our Goal
- To raise money for families in rural Kenya by sponsoring a community-wide carnival on September 6, 2008.
- To empower kids to be leaders.
- To raise awareness of the poverty and struggles in many parts of the world.
- To bring the community together for a good cause.
All of the money raised goes to the “UMOJA Project”, which means “Unity” in Swahili. It will provide support to orphans and vulnerable children in the following ways:
- Food, clothing, bedding, basic needs.
- School fees and uniforms.
- Training, counseling, and support services through local contacts in Kenya.
The goal is to provide a “hand up”, not a hand out, to train people to be self-sufficient.
Why does Provocate think you should attend this event?
Provocate is a big fan of UMOJA, the grassroots project launched by the Global Interfaith Partnership, nearly a dozen Indy churches, congregations, and synagogues. Engaging children to work on solutions would make this great initiative even greater.
