September 29 — Rumi and the Circle of Divine Love
If the mystic poet Mawlana Jalaluddin Rumi were alive today, he’d be celebrating his 800th birthday, feted by United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO), which has declared 2007 the “Year of Rumi.” He’d probably spend part of his year at the Indianapolis Museum of Art, and so should you.
When: Saturday, September 29, 3:00 pm
Where: Indianapolis Museum of Art Pulliam Great Hall
13th century poet and a scholar, Sufi mystic, and theologian who lived in what is now Turkey, in his lifetime, Rumi’s poetic works were influential in Muslim mystical thought and literature; today he is the best-selling poet in America. Participants can join the IMA’s celebration of Rumi’s 800th birthday with an exploration of his life, work and spiritual philosophy featuring scholars and translators David and Sabrineh Fideler. The Fidelers read and perform Rumi’s poetry in Persian and English with musical accompaniment on traditional instruments and discuss Rumi in the context of other Sufi poets. In addition, examine several Baluchi prayer rugs in the IMA collection, designed with motifs symbolic of the journey toward the sacred.
If this sounds cool, check out … the poets who aren’t Rumi coming to town this fall. You’ll also want to learn about Islam in modern Turkey October 16 and in South Asia November 5.
