September 30 — Talk with world’s foremost naturalist George Schaller

How do you win the Indianapolis Prize? Start by becoming one of the world’s greatest scientists, help set up Arctic National Wildlife Refuge, save a bunch of endangered species … at least that’s how George Schaller did it.

When: Tuesday September 30, 7:30 PM

Where: Atherton Union Reilly Room, Butler University

This is part of Butler University’s 2008-2009 J. James Woods Lectures in the Sciences and Mathematics. It’s free and open to the public. For more information, call (317) 940-9293.

This is from the Indianapolis Prize:

Dr. Schaller will be speaking to Butler University students and the public about his visit back to the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge in 2006 after 50 years. Schaller assisted in the research of Olaus and Mardy Murie in 1956 whose surveys helped create what is now the 20 million acre Arctic National Wildlife Refuge. He will also touch on his current research taking place on the Tibetan Plateau. Schaller helped establish 175,000 sq mile Chang Tang Reserve, which helped protect the breeding and calving grounds of the chiru or Tibetan antelope. Finally, Schaller will talk about his research that shattered the myths about mountain gorillas. It is an experience that forever changed him. “No one who looks into a gorilla’s eyes intelligent, gentle, vulnerable – can remain unchanged, for the gap between ape and human vanishes; we know that the gorilla still lives within us. Do gorillas also recognize this ancient connection?” says Schaller.

Why does Provocate think you should attend this event?
Speaking as part of the Woods Lectures will remind the audience that Schaller is more than a hero of conservation … he is an important scientist.
