September 17 — Isabel Phiri discusses HIV/AIDS, violence against women, and notions of masculinity in Africa
How is it possible to address the issues of AIDS in Africa without giving more power and protection to African women? And how can women’s status be changed without changing notions of male power and masculinity? And how can this be done without running the risk of damaging, or even destroying, traditional cultures?
When: Wednesday, September 17, 6:00 pm; Phiri has issued a special invitation to people engaged with HIV/AIDS. She asks them to come meet with her at 5:00 pm before her lecture.
Where: Room 166 Christian Theological Seminary 1000 W. 42nd Street Indianapolis, IN 46208
Why does Provocate think you should attend this event?
Prof. Phiri wrote one of the defining articles on the topic: “African Women Of Faith Speak Out In An HIV/AIDS Era” … the critical question will be what we can learn about addressing similar challenges of socially-structured public/private health in Indy.

The International Center’s recognition of the IU-Moi partnership as International Citizen of the Year September 16. The folks at the dinner will be more familiar with these issues from a medical than a theological view. The Latino Coalition against Domestic & Sexual Violence has a conference addressing some of these issues September 18. You can meet some Hoosiers working on HIV/AIDS in Africa on November 16.
Know before you go:
Prof. Phiri wrote the book on the topic, or at least wrote the training module on the topic. As part of the “Theology in the HIV and AIDS Era” curriculum, she wrote Gender, Religion and HIV and AIDS Prevention. A lot of pages but very easy to read, and fascinating.
