November 11 — Debra Force and John Vanausdall discuss “The Valuation of Art”

The important question in art seems not to be “Do I like it?” or “Is it good?” … it’s “What’s it worth?” When does that become a question of law rather than aesthetics?

John Vanausdall is President and CEO of the Eiteljorg Museum of American Indians and Western Art:



As president and CEO of the Eiteljorg Museum of American Indians and Western Art, Vanausdall has helped build the endowment at the museum and has overseen the current $37 million capital campaign, which is nearing completion. He has also helped expand the miss ion of the institution and build the museum’s membership and support base. In his prior days at The Children’s Museum of Indianapolis, he was responsible for numerous exhibition and program developments, including SpaceQuest Planetarium, the Center for Exploration and the CineDome, as well as the museum’s strategic planning. In 1989, Vanausdall graduated from the Museum Management Institute, a program of The American Federation of the Arts and The Getty Trust in Berkeley, Calif. At the time, he was with The Children’s Museum, where he started as a curator of physical science in 1978. In 1984, he became information systems manager, then director of exhibits in 1987. In 1993, he became vice president and director of research and planning, a post he held until joining the Eiteljorg in 1996.
