November 10 — Hear award-winning writer/poet and bishoip’s daughter Honor Moore
Honor Moore gave distinction as a poet and memoirist … but it is her biography of her father — a crusading bishop who hid his sexuality from the world — that has made her a celebrity.
When: Monday November 10, 7:30-9:30 PM
Where: Robertson Eidson-Duckwall Recital Hall Butler University 4600 SUNSET AVE., INDIANAPOLIS, IN 46208
From a previous talk by Honor Moore at Antioch:
Honor Moore is the author of three collections of poetry, including Red Shoes. Her biography of her grandmother, painter Margarett Sargent, The White Blackbird, was named a New York Times Notable Book of the Year. Her writing as appeared in such publications as The New York Times, The American Scholar, and The New Yorker. A recipient of fellowships from the Guggenheim Foundation and the National Endowment for the Arts, Moore lives in New York City and teaches at The New School and Columbia University.
Her latest book, The Bishop’s Daughter, is a powerful new memoir that chronicles Ms. Moore’s turbulent relationship with her father, an Episcopal priest, who struggled privately with his sexuality while she openly explored hers. A father of nine children, Paul Moore Jr. felt a sexual attraction to both men and women throughout his life. This secret would challenge his faith and have a devastating effect on his family, in particular his relationship with Honor, his eldest daughter, who herself explored relationships with both men and women in the liberating atmospheres of New York City in the 60s, 70s and 80s. Honor Moore’s book is a searching account of the consequences of sexual secrets on a family’s bond.
