November 12 — Sagamore Institute reports on the educational needs and possibilities of immigrant communities in Indiana

Hear another piece of the BIG study by John Clark & Colleagues about the future of immigration, higher education, and the economy in Indiana. This part looks at the preparation (or lack thereof) for college of children of documented and undocumented immigrants.

When: Monday, November 12, 9:30 a.m.-11:30 a.m.
Where: Lumina Foundation 30 South Meridian Street 8th Floor Indianapolis, Indiana 46202

One of the greatest challenges facing schools in Indiana is helping realize the potential of the state’s rapidly growing immigrant population. From the daughters of scientists drawn to Indianapolis’s booming biotechnology firms to the sons of undocumented and unlettered day laborers in rural towns, the needs of the children of immigrants are very diverse. How are schools preparing these newcomers for college and advanced training? What are the most pressing problems reported by educators, businesspeople, and parents? And what seem to be the most effective new ideas for improving the quality of education and opening new opportunities for immigrants’ children?

Sagamore Institute’s researchers present the second of three working papers on Immigrants and Higher Education in Indiana. Drawing from a wide range of interviews across the state, John Clark and other researchers will explore new ways of thinking about how to provide all children with the education they will need to succeed in the 21st century. As a bonus, view a screening of “Loz Invenzivlez—Our Invincible Youth,” a short film made by Latino high school and college students in Indianapolis. Produced by the “We Have a DREAM” committee (an initiative of El Puente Project), the film provides unique insights into the students’ educational goals, challenges, and special assets. The students who made the film will join the discussion.
