The mission of the Latino Coalition Against Domestic & Sexual Violence is to promote awareness and work toward the elimination of domestic and sexual violence and contributing conditions affecting Latino communities across Indiana.
One keynote speaker at the conference is David Pelzer, one of the best known survivors of child abuse in the country. The other is Betty Ramirez Swinners, owner of Diversity Speakers and a victim of abuse who grew up homeless.
Why does Provocate think you should attend this event?
There is a triple challenge facing members of some newcomer communities. Cultures have different understandings of privacy and gender-relations. Families come from countries in which the police are not to be trusted and government social welfare agencies are ineffective. And if they lack proper legal status in the US they may be actively trying to avoid official agencies and legal authorities. This makes it particularly important to think clearly about addressing domestic violence and abuse.
