September 11 — See the Brazilian film “Eu Tu Eles / Me You Them”
A simple and gentle story: an imposing young woman with an illegitimate child, returns to her home in the outback of the Bahia region of Brazil. There she marries an older man, has his child, then takes up with two other men and has children with them as well, all of them living together on the edge of poverty. Simple story, why has it stirred up so many deep conversations in Brazil?

From the IMA’s blurb:
Eu Tu Eles / Me You Them (Brazil, 2000, 104 mins., dir. Andrucha Waddington):
Brazilian director Andrucha Waddington’s gently ironic and seductively picturesque tale of female empowerment centers on an impoverished mother of four children by four different fathers. Based on a true story, Waddington explores how his heroine navigates an intensely patriarchal environment, as three of the fathers end up sharing a house with the mother and children. Shown in collaboration with the Association of International Women of Indianapolis.

Why does Provocate think you should attend this event?
The soundtrack by the great Gilberto Gil would be reason enough to see “Eu Tu Eres.” The movie has stirred much conversation in Brazil about gender relations, the meaning of love and family, the nature of feminine beauty. Get ten Brazilians together and ask what is their favorite movie: there’s a good chance two or three will name this one.
