October 16: “Secularism and Islam in Turkey Today”

As the Islamists in Turkey continue to consolidate their hold on power in Turkey, what does this say about democracy and Islam? Is Turkey’s nearly century-long experiment imposing secularism on a Muslim society at an end? And how will this effect America’s relation with the Middle East?

When: Tuesday October 16, 7:00-9:00 PM
Where: Butler University Krannert Room of Clowes Memorial Hall. Admission is free.

Keynote speaker: Dr. Fatma Müge Göcek is a professor of sociology at the University of Michigan and the author of books and articles on the sociology of the Middle East, gender roles, Middle Eastern political cartoons and Turkish cultural history.
Respondents: Dr. Zeki Saritoprak is assistant professor of religion at John Carroll University in Cleveland, Ohio. Dr. Aron Aji is dean of the College of Liberal Arts at St. Ambrose University in Davenport, Iowa.

Butler Seminars on Religion and World Civilization bring scholars, religious leaders and other experts from across the nation and around the world to Butler for discussions about the intersection of religion and major issues of our time.

Sound interesting? Contrast Islam in Turkey with discussions of Christianity in Europe September 18, and of Islam in South and West Asia November 5. Or hear another side of Islam’s history in Turkey with a performance of the great poet Rumi September 29.
