October 23: Nobel Peace Prize nominee Joe Mamlin discusses what we can do about AIDS and poverty in Africa

Although it receives little attention outside Indianapolis, for the past several years, the partnership between the medical Schools of Indiana University and Moi University in Eldoret Kenya has been one of the most important pieces in the struggle for Africa’s survival. Joe Mamlin has headed IU’s efforts in Africa. Hear him talk about “Treating AIDS and Poverty in Africa,” and ask what you can do to help.

When: Tuesday October 23, 7:30 PM
Where: Butler University Atherton Union Reilly Room. Free and open to the public. For more information, call (317) 940-9861.

After Joseph Mamlin, professor emeritus of medicine at Indiana University School of Medicine, retired in 2000, he founded the AMPATH program in Kenya. AMPATH, a partnership between IU School of Medicine and Moi University School of Medicine in Kenya, is one of sub-Saharan Africa’s largest and most comprehensive HIV control programs. Dr. Mamlin will speak about his medical work in Africa as part of Butler University’s 2007-08 J. James Woods Lectures in the Sciences and Mathematics series.

If Mamlin’s tlak sounds interesting, you’ll want to be part of his program’s gala October 13. Contrast this approach to fighting AIDS with Ryan White’s mother November 13.
