July 12 - Sustainable Home Workshop

A workshop on “Creating Your Sustainable Home,” dealing with strategies for “re-greening” your exi sting home with updates, modifications or remodeling OR buying or building a green house (see below), will occur on Sat. July 12, 1:30-4:30 pm, at the Jewish Community Center, 6701 Hoover Rd. (Cost: $59), conducted by Albert Schinazi, Sustainability Consultant & Contractor, LEED For Homes Advocate USGBC. SUSTAINABLE HOME WORKSHOP

Participants will review green home standards, such as LEED, NAHB, and PATH. They will learn an integrated systems approach to evaluate options for energy production, energy consumption, heating / cooling & ventilation, moisture control, insulation, weather proofing, indoor air quality & health, environmental impact of materials used, methods of construction, zoning, building codes, energy grants, energy tax incentives & rebates, energy mortgages, and lifestyle choices that support sustainable goals. As time and interest allows they will explore; Alternative building methods, such as; straw bale, rammed earth, structural insulated panels, etc; Energy options such as passive and active solar, photovoltaics, geothermal, fuel cells, etc., Finish materials, such as, paints, flooring, decking materials, recycled products,
sustainable wood, lighting and applianc es; Ma naging waste from remodeling or new
construction.
