June 16: “One Voice, One Hope: Acting on the Millennium Development Goals”

Episcopal presiding bishop to visit Indianapolis June 15-17 to push us to think more responsibly and creatively about solving problems of global poverty

The Most Rev. Katharine Jefferts Schori, presiding bishop of the Episcopal Church, will visit Indianapolis June 15-17. Jefferts Schori, elected in June 2006, is the first woman to hold the office of presiding bishop in the Episcopal Church’s history. She also is the first woman primate in the Anglican Communion, of which the Episcopal Church is a member.

On Friday, June 15, from 2 to 4 p.m. Jefferts Schori will address diocesan lay and clergy leaders at the Madame Walker Theatre. On Saturday, June 16, she will be the keynote speaker at a daylong (9 a.m. until 5:30 p.m.) conference at the Radisson Hotel, downtown, that will be free and open to the public. The conference, “One Voice, One Hope: Acting on the Millennium Development Goals,” will address the United Nations’ eight goals to cut extreme global poverty in half by 2015.

Rounding out the conference at 2:45 p.m., Jefferts Schori and the Rt. Rev. Catherine M. Waynick, bishop of the Episcopal Diocese of Indianapolis, will lead a panel discussion on developing a global partnership to accomplish the goals. The following leaders also are on the panel:

  • Sally Brown, president and CEO, Ambassadors for Children
  • Martha Gardner, consultant for environmental ministries in the Episcopal Church’s Office of Peace and Justice Ministries
  • Dr. Jill Helphenstine, IU-Kenya Partnership (AMPATH), which has been nominated for a Nobel Peace Prize
  • The Rev. Dr. M. Kent Millard, senior pastor, St. Luke’s United Methodist Church, Indianapolis
  • James Morris, former executive director of World Food Programme, former executive vice president of Lilly Endowment
  • Abigail Nelson, vice president for programs, Episcopal Relief and Development
  • Rabbi Dennis Sasso, Temple Beth-El Zedek, Indianapolis
  • The Rev. Dr. Angelique Walker-Smith, executive director, The Church Federation of Greater Indianapolis

On Sunday, June 17, Jefferts Schori will participate in both the 9 and 11 a.m. services at Christ Church Cathedral, which will feature a jazz Mass by David Baker, head of the jazz department at Indiana University, with the Cathedral Choir of Men and Boys and the Cathedral Girls’ Choir.

Christ Church Cathedral, in partnership with the Episcopal Diocese of Indianapolis, St. Paul’s Church and Trinity Church, will host the presiding bishop’s visit.
