June 24 — East and West: Centuries-old Japanese story-telling artform meets American stand-up comedy
What happens when Rakugo, a centuries old storytelling artform from Japan, meets US-style stand-up? We’ll have a chance to see when Katsura Kaishi comes to Carmel.
When: Tuesday, June 24, 7:00 - 8:30 p.m.
Where: Carmel High School 520 East Main Street Carmel, IN 46032
Says the Japan America Society of Indiana:
In an exciting program that bridges the language barrier with uproarious laughter, Katsura Kaishi, world-renowned English Rakugo performer, will bring this thriving form of traditional entertainment to Carmel for a one-night only engagement. Katsura has made more than 200 performances in 12 different countries and in 2007 was appointed by the Japanese Ministry of Culture as its cultural exchange ambassador. Rakugo can be best described as Japanese traditional, sit-down, comic storytelling. It has a rich 400-year history. The performer sits on a small cushion in front of the audience and acts out amusing stories consisting of conversations among several characters.
Sounds cool. It has been called “a sitcom with one person playing all the parts.” Check out this clip of Katsura Kaishi performing:
