June 5 — The Japan America Society of Indiana celebrates 20 years

We’ve come a long way since the xenophobic anxieties in the 1980s about Japan’s economic threat to America. Now Indiana communities that saw Japan as a threat are scrambling over themselves to attract Japanese investment … and the Japan American Society of Indiana is part of the reason why attitudes have shifted in the past 20 years.

When: Thursday, June 05, 6:30-9:30 PM

Where: Indiana Roof Ballroom 140 West Washington Street, Indianapolis, IN 46204

For more information and to RSVP, go here.

The keynote speaker: His Excellency Yukio Takasu, Ambassador and Permanent Representative of Japan to the United Nations.

The Government of Japan will present its highest award to a renowned Hoosier at the Gala. Jim Morris has recently returned to Indiana after serving as the Executive Director of the U.N. World Food Programme in Rome (with the rank of U.S. Ambassador). Ambassador Morris is an inspiring speaker, and we look forward to his remarks as he receives Japan’s “Grand Cordon Order of the Rising Sun Award.”

Know before you go … Larry Ingraham of the Sagamore Institute has written about how the relation between Indiana and Japan was nurtured by Bob Orr in the 1980s.

If this event sounds interesting, be sure to check out … Some of the Japanese cultural programs, such as the English language performance of Japanese story-telling, Rakugo, June 24. Or go to the IMA June 21 for a celebration of summer solstice, featuring Japanese kyudo archery and Butoh dance.

    Hello John,
Noticed your published comment in the April Indianapolis Monthly about the History Center and that it “opens out on the canal, one of Downtown’s grerat human spaces.”

For future Provocate notices/calendar, feel free to publicize the weekly Thursday night summer concerts on the canal at the History Center and as enjoyed by many seated in Canal Park. It’s a diverse crowd.

We will seek to flyer the audience each performance to build our coalition.
