May 23 — Mexico’s Disappearing Municipalities: The social and cultural impact of out-migration to the US
We assume that immigrants coming to the US with and without proper authorization are blessings to their home countirs: after all, remittances are one of the main sources of foreign exchange for Mexico and most Central American countries. But a closer look at villages and towns that now have almost no one of working age, that have most of their kids growing up in families whose parents are working up North … the blessing is mixed. Learn how this affacts us in Indiana.
When: Friday, May 23rd at 11:00 a.m.
Where: IUPUI Global Crossroads Classroom, ES 2132 (in the Education and Social Work Building).
“Mexico’s Disappearing Municipalities: The social and cultural impact of out-migration to the USA” by Dr. Tomás Serrano of the Autonomous University of the State of Hidalgo will be the first in a series of videoconferences on the topic of immigration with IUPUI’s new colleagues at the Autonomous University of the State of Hidalgo in Pachuca, Mexico. Dr. Tomás Serrano, a professor in the Sociology Department, will give a lecture on immigration from the perspective of Mexican sending communities. The videoconference will be held in the trans-dimensional distance learning facilities of the Global Crossroads Classroom, ES 2132 (in the Education and Social Work Building).
In March, IUPUI and the Autonomous University of the State of Hidalgo signed a Memorandum of Agreement, and the two universities will engage in collaborative activities across all of the disciplines. If you are interested in learning more about this partnership or becoming involved with the partnership, please contact the IUPUI Office of International Affairs and speak with either Ian McIntosh (imcintos@iupui.edu) or Dawn Michele Whitehead (dmwhiteh@iupui.edu ).
