May 31 — The International Tibet Independence Movement presents “Tibet Night in Indianapolis”

It’s hard work, liberating a proto-country from one of the most powerful and defensive empires left in the world. Hard work, and expensive too. Just ask the International Tibet Independence Movement, which has been organizing a counter-torch relay, and other activities to draw attention to the abuse of Tibetans in China. For just a few dollars you can help out … plus eat Tibetan food, listen to Tibetan music, meet a wide range of Tibetan activists, see a short film. Did we mention Tibetan food?

When: Saturday May 31, 7:00 PM

Where: St. Luke’s United Methodist Church (100 West 86th Street Indianapolis, Indiana 46260)

Says Larry Gerstein, President of the International Tibet Independence Movement

As you all know, there have been many disturbing and inspiring developments in Tibet since March. As a result, ITIM has been very, very busy and will continue to be through the upcoming Olympics in August. We have numerous additional activities planned including the hosting of the Tibetan Freedom Torch in Indiana during the beginning of June and a walk from Madison (WI) to Chicago the end of July.

Not surprisingly, we have spent a good deal of money on our activities this year, and in fact, we are almost out of funds! To implement our upcoming activities, we need your financial help.

It has been a very long time since ITIM has hosted a “Tibet Night.” So, we have decided to sponsor this event on the evening of May 31 (Saturday). There will be Tibetan food, culture, a short movie, and lots of opportunities to talk with other individuals interested in Tibet. The event will take place at St. Luke’s United Methodist Church (100 West 86th Street Indianapolis, Indiana 46260). Our suggested donation is $15 for adults and $10 for students.

More details about this event and others will be forthcoming.

It’s kind of cool how many links to Tibet can be found around Indy, we’d be dopes not to use this opportunity to learn more about this vital issue at a critical time. For more information about the International Tibet Independence Movement, visit their website: www.rangzen.org. For more information, contact Larry Gerstein at rangzen@aol.com.

Know before you go … Read some recent news stories about Tibet. Two interesting books about Tibet have just been published: The Open Road: The Global Journey of the Fourteenth Dalai Lama by Pico Iyer; and Memories of Life in Lhasa Under Chinese Rule by Tubten Khétsun and Matthew Akester.

If this event sounds interesting, be sure to check out … On June 17 Larry Gerstein will debate the topic of Tibetan independence with John Clark of Provocate (who stresses that he may articulate arguments from the perspectives of the Chinese and American governments that he does not hold). Sharon Stone recently gave air-headed celebrities a bad name when she blamed the tragic earthquakes in Sichuan on the bad karma China is reaping for oppressing the Tibetans. Even — especially — supporters of Tibetan independence should try to help those who are suffering. We have a chance with a fundraiser for Sichuan victims June 8.
