May 17 — Campecine 2008: From Invisible to Invincible

No one makes movies like the Indianapolis-based Latino Youth Collective, which puts digital cameras and sophisticated editing software in the hands of kids so that they can show how they view their lives. See some examples of their work at the Indianapolis Museum of Art when this enormously creative group of high school and college students puts on Campecine 2008 (Campecine = campesino + cine). The varriomentaries (their word for documentaries) deal with gangs, the voicelessness of undocumented immigrant kids, and teen pregnancy. If you are lucky, they will show their wildly imaginative “Loz Invenzivlez,” all but guaranteed to make your head burst in flames.

When: Saturday May 17, 2:00-5:00 PM
Where: Indianapolis Museum of Art, 4000 N. Michigan Road Indianapolis
More than a film festival, Campecine was founded in 2007 by youth who are leading and building their communities through collective action. Listen as local youth of all colors share their views on achieving dreams, understanding racism and wrestling teen pregnancy. With the theme “From Invisible to Invincible,” Campecine 2008 will move audiences nationwide from empathy to solidarity by screening youth-produced ‘varriomentaries’ (documentaries) and engaging participants in participatory theatre dialogues.
Campecine is a free and bilingual event open to the public.
The Latino Youth Collective (LYC) provides resources and opportunities for youth to engage in personal and community development through critical pedagogy, grassroots organizing, and collective action. The all-volunteer staff runs three programs: El Puente Project, FIRME, and WE HAVE A DREAM Committee. The El Puente Project reaches out to college and high school youth through a website (www.elpuenteproject.com) with activities and information that further the educational aspirations and opportunities of the Latino community. Film Inquiry Research Media Education (FIRME) engages youth and equips them as organic intellectuals through youth led critical participatory action research. The WE HAVE A DREAM Committee engages young people in grassroots organizing on issues and policies that promote education, diversity and social change.
