John Hagedorn has a fascinating history doing work with gangs in Chicago, Milwaukee and elsewhere and is a recognized authority on youth violence. His website for more details is: http://gangresearch.net/ Hagedorn is Associate Professor of Criminal Justice, at the University of Illinois-Chicago and Senior Research Fellow of the Great Cities Institute. A distinguished researcher and gangs activist, Hagedorn is an international authority on youth involved in organized armed violence. His new book “A World of Gangs: Armed Young Men and Gangsta Rap Culture” (University of Minnesota Press, forthcoming 2008) has been described as “an illuminating journey around the cultures, lives, tragedies and dreams of millions of rebellious youth around the planet … It is an indispensable work to understand the world we live in and essential reading for students of cities and communities,” Manuel Castells, University of California, Berkeley.
