April 10 — “Human Embryonic Stem Cell Research: A Catholic Perspective”

Dr. James Walter is the Austin and Ann O’Malley Professor of Bioethics and the chairman of The Bioethics Institute at Loyola Marymount University in Los Angeles, California. He also serves as a clinical bioethicist in the intensive care unit and on the palliative care service at Little Company of Mary Hospital in Torrance, California.


After completing his undergraduate degree in philosophy, Dr. Walter earned five advanced degrees, including a Ph.D. in ethics at the Catholic University of Louvain in Belgium. He has delivered more than 450 scholarly papers and public lectures in the United States, Europe, and Asia, made frequent appearances on television and radio shows, and published six books, most recently Artificial Nutrition & Hydration and the Permanently Unconscious Patient: The Catholic Debate in 2007. He is the recipient of several awards, including the 2007 Spirit of St. Francis Award from St. Francis Medical Center in Lynwood, California.


Dr. Walter is the founding chairman of The International Forum for Catholic Bioethicists, which meets annually in Brussels, Belgium, with participants from around the world.
