April 16 — John Katunga of Catholic Relief Services discusses the crisis in Kenya

John Katunga was the head of the Nairobi Peace Initiative, an NGO that sought to find African solutions to African problems. Now he is East Africa regional technical advisor for peacebuilding and justice for Catholic Relief Services with a special emphasis on Kenya.

John Katunga is Catholic Relief Services’ Regional Technical Advisor for Peacebuilding and Justice in the east Africa region, based in Nairobi, Kenya. Serving in this role since January 2007, he provides technical guidance and assistance to CRS peacebuilding and justice programs in Ethiopia, Kenya, Sudan, Tanzania and Uganda.


John also shares his expertise across Africa, Europe and the United States by teaching peacebuilding and conflict transformation courses at institutes of higher learning and peacebuilding training institutes. In addition, as a senior trainer for the Woodrow Wilson International Center for Scholars in Washington D.C., he provides leadership training for government leaders, military officials and police personnel in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) and Burundi. John also continues to work with the Catholic bishops and other religious leaders in the Great Lakes region to build their peace and reconciliation skills.


Before joining CRS, John served as the Acting Executive Director of the Nairobi Peace Initiative-Africa, a peace organization focused on conflict resolution and reconciliation across the continent. Previously, he worked as a social sciences researcher in the DRC at the Natural Science Research Center in the Kivus and as a human rights representative for the Congolese Human Rights League, the first human rights organization in the DRC.


John possesses exceptional skills in dialogue facilitation, community mediation, negotiation and reconciliation. He also has vast experience in planning, analyzing, implementing, monitoring and evaluating peace initiatives and conflict transformation processes.


A native of the Democratic Republic of Congo, John holds a B.A. and master’s degree in Political Science from Kisangani Univesity in the DRC as well as a master’s in Conflict Transformation from the Eastern Mennonite University in Virginia. He is married and the father of four children.
