April 10 — Latino Scholarship Fund Dinner

Critics of immigration to the US say they don’t dislike particular ethnic groups … it’s just that newcomers refuse to assimilate, refuse to learn English, drop out of school in disproprtionate numbers. Well, here’s an opportunity for the critics to prove their sincerity, by contributing to an important fund providing college scholarships to gifted Latino students that would not otherwise be able to pursue higher education.

When: Thursday, April 10, 6:00-10:00 PM

Where: Scottish Rite Cathedral 650 N. Meridian St. Indianapolis

Although many groups and communities in Indiana have stepped up to address the problem of qualified Latino kids lacking the financial means to attend college, there’s still a long way to go to provide adequate opportunities for this most rapidly growing group in the state. That makes this a particularly important event. The Mexican Scholarship Fund (MSF), La Plaza, ALMA Scholarship Fund, The Society of Friends of Colombia (SADCO), and the Indiana Latino Institute are organizing this event with the help of USA Funds (the leading national education-loan guarantor, which has agreed to subscribe the full cost of the dinner so that all money raised can go into scholarships) and the Central Indiana Community Foundation (fiscal agent for the event). It will be pricy, as it should be — it’s a fundraiser! — but for your contribution you will get cocktails, dinner, a chance to participate in a silent auction, a chance to meet other engaged leaders of the community, entertainment from Latin America, probably some very bright young scholarship hopefuls … sounds like a pretty good deal, Provocate will be there.
