February 18 — Provocate presents “Protests, Prods, and Persuasion: How to Sway a Superpower”

Provocate.org presents an experiment in problem solving. Before Chinese Ambassador Zhou Wenzhong’s visit to Indianapolis on February 22, diverse opponents of Chinese foreign policy will for the first time sit down to discuss strategies that work to change Chinese behavior … and those that don’t.

When: Monday Feb. 18 7-9 PM

Where: IUPUI Student Center 420 University Blvd. Room 405

Think of all the grievances currently being aired about China. Consumer and environmental protection, suppression of Tibetan and Taiwanese aspirations for self-determination, support for thuggish governments in Burma and Sudan in China’s quest for natural resources, repression of all manner of rights (labor, religious, human and civil). Local scholars and experts will guide discussions of questions such as:

  • What is China doing, and why?

  • Should we expect it to change?

  • Can the US government prod changes in Chinese policies without provoking a backlash?

  • What sorts of protests against China make a meaningful difference, and why?

  • What can we do when Ambassador Zhou visits?

  • What can we do during the Beijing Olympics?

  • What policies should the next US President pursue?
