March 19 — Will Turkey join the European Union?
“Old Europe” is finding it difficult to digest new admissions to the EU such as Romania and Bulgaria. Think they are up Turkey? Look at it this way: When Turkey joins, the EU will have more Muslims than Catholics; and it will directly border Syria, Iraq, and Iran.

Gerald Robbins is Associate Scholar at The Foreign Policy Research Institute in Washington, D.C. He specializes in Turkey, the Caspian and Central Asian regions. He was awarded a Fulbright-Hayes fellowship to study rural-urban migration at Bosphorus University, Istanbul in 1982 and hold a M.A. in Near Eastern Studies from New York University (1984). Since then Robbins has used his Turkish language skills to report from Ankara and Istanbul for the Weekly Standard, the Asian Wall Street Journal Weekly and the Washington Times. He served as Program Director for Freedom House in Baku, Azerbaijan from 1995-1996, managing programs promoting post-Soviet political and economic development. Robbins is a frequent lecturer at universities and foreign policy institutes. He authored Azerbaijan (2005) as part of FPRI’s “The Growth and Influence of Islam” series. He is currently working on a book about the Ottoman Empire and Persia’s Qajar Empires.
Reservations should be made by calling (317) 566-2036. Dinner for this special event is $22.00 per person (Members and their guests paid in advance), $24 if paid at the door. All reservations, whether by mail, telephone or e-mail MUST be received by 5:00 p.m. Thursday, March 13th. Since dinners are catered, all reservations must be guaranteed. Cancellation deadline is Thursday, March 13th, 2008. Canceling reservations by this deadline will avoid a financial commitment to ICWA. If you are attending the discussion only, no reservations are necessary, however, there is a $3.00 fee for ICWA members, $4.00 fee for non-members and full time students are free.
