These are up and coming artists working in the mediums of painting, drawing, installation, sculpture, mixed media, photography, video, and commercial objects. Several of the artists have received notable recognition at the national and international level, including fellowships and exhibitions in France, premier galleries in New York and Art Basel.

The show’s theme is based on the “Experience Economy,” an era in which every business is a stage, and companies must design memorable events for which they charge admission. All consumption can be understood in experiential terms. Memory itself becomes the product; the experience. Examples? Think of Disney, or for that matter Starbucks — you don’t just pay for the coffee, you pay for an experience that engages all five of your senses.

The project started with a panel discussion at Yale University on April 26. After taking shape first in Indianapolis, the show will then travel to other cities in upcoming months.

On May 5 at 1 p.m. involved artists, curators and others will take part in a panel discussion on how art fits with the “experience economy” we live in today – as opposed to the old “service and goods economy” of the 1980s. The panel discussion will exam ine themes of consumption, experience and memory as it relates to contemporary issues in art, media, commerce and culture. Of the panelists, two are graduating mfa representatives from Yale University ( Derek Larson and Ben Echeverria ), the third Mario Caro - professor of museum studies and visual culture at the Herron School of Art and Design.

Know before you go … Start getting up to speed on the “experience economy” with the article that kicked it off:  “Welcome to the Experience Economy” by James Gilmore and Joseph Pine.  Derek Larson recommends bringing examples of advertising to the event, as concrete examples of how the Experience Economy works.
