Ever since she was an undergraduate and her design was selected for the Vietnam War Memorial, Maya Lin has been one of the most celebrated and controversial sculpture and landscape artists in America. Her work in Indianapolis continues her use of nature as part of art.

In the fall of 2007, the IMA unveiled Above and Below—a commissioned installation by Maya Lin, on the Fortune Balcony of the Asian art galleries, inspired by the complex structure of underground White River tributaries in south central Indiana. Emerging on the international scene with her design of the Vietnam War Memorial in 1982, Lin’s work has always hovered at the intersection of art, nature and architecture.
