A dedicated professional with a history of being recognized as a top quality educator, Dr. Eugene White is now superintendent of Indianapolis Public Schools. White previously served as Superintendent of the Metropolitan School District of Washington Township from 1994-2005. He was selected as Indiana Superintendent of the Year in 2002 and named a Distinguished Hoosier by Gov. Mitch Daniels in 2005. With more than 25 years experience in Indiana education, he is widely known as a visionary and an innovative leader who is not afraid to enact change.

Eugene G. White became superintendent of Indianapolis Public Schools on July 1, 2005 succeeding Duncan Pat Pritchett, who retired after seven years as IPS superintendent.

He is the second African-American to hold the position. Born Dec. 15, 1947, Eugene Gordon White grew up in poverty in the segregated South. He attended segregated schools all through college at Alabama A&M University in Huntsville and did not go to school with white students until he was pursuing a master’s degree at the University of Tennessee.

White became a teacher and then a principal in Fort Wayne in the late 1980s and early 1990s. After two years as an IPS administrator he became superintendent of Washington Township Schools in northern Marion County and held that post until seeking the IPS position in 2005.
