April 10 — Santayana Seminar

80 years ago, George Santayana called John Dewey’s naturalism “half-hearted and short-winded.” Dewey replied that Santayana’s naturalism seems as “broken-backed as mine to him seems short-winded.” Might we see a continuation of this philosophic kerfuffle at IUPUI?

When: Thursday, April 10, 12:00-1:30
Where: IUPUI Cavanaugh Hall 438 425 University Blvd., Indianapolis

The Santayana Seminar Series is a forum for scholars to present their work on Santayana or to lead focused discussions on an important work by or about Santayana. The Seminar encourages both the deep inquiry into Santayana’s thought and the broad exploration of Santayana’s relation to other thinkers, writers, or artists. Students and scholars from philosophy and other disciplines are invited to participate in the ongoing conversation about Santayana’s writings.

Featured speakers Matthew Flamm and Beth Eddy. Dr. Flamm is Assistant Professor of Philosophy at Rockford College and has published numerous articles on George Santayana and John Dewey. Dr. Eddy is Assistant Professor at Worchester Polytechnic Institute and author of The Religious Naturalism and Cultural Criticism of Kenneth Burke and Ralph Ellison.
