January 17 — 17th Annual Statewide Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Indiana Holiday celebration
How often does Dr Martin Luther King’s Birthday get celebrated every year? More often than you would expect (many times, not only once), but perhaps less than it should be. One of the big celebrations is sponsored by the Indiana Civil Rights Commission, this year at the State Museum.
When: Thursday January 17, noon
Where: Indiana State Museum 650 W. Washington Street Indianapolis 46204
17th Anniversary Statewide Celebration of the birthday of DR. MARTIN LUTHER KING, Jr. The program begins at noon and will end at 1pm. The Program will include Governor Mitch Daniels, with a message from Rev. Dr. Thomas Brown; the Rosa Parks Freedom Bus, featuring actress Sherri Brown-Webster as Rosa Parks, and national recording artist JOSHUA.
Know before you go … Read some of Martin Luther King’s speeches, which even in print are stunning in their power, vision, and poetry.
If you think this event sounds interesting, check out … some of the other MLK celebrations this January, including the Peace Learning Center’s family friendly MLK fest January 19, poet Nikki Giovanni’s talk at the IUPUI Black Student Union’s formal dinner January 20 … and on January 21 take your pick of the “Keep the Dream Alive” Freedom Walk from the Urban League to Madame Walker Theatre; the Indiana Historical Society’s celebration of King as a near-Hoosier; or a couple of century of music by composers of African descent at the University of Indianapolis.
