November 15 — Prosperity, Quality of Life & Community Priorities

A familiar biblical scripture says to “Love thy neighbor as thyself”. But, can we truly love our neighbors as ourselves? Come on, my neighbor?

When: Thurs. Nov. 15, 2007 6:30 - 8:30 p.m.
Where: Cairo Cafe 3047 Lafayette Rd. Indianapolis, IN 46222 317.926.2233

Mosaic: An International Conversation Cafe Community

The drive to accumulate wealth can make us self-centered, narcissistic, and numb to the needs and condition of others. This discussion is not to trivialize the need we all have for security, safety and the pursuit of happiness. However, in our pursuit of happiness, we (Americans and those up have adopted American values) have become selfish to the point of excess, waste, and misaligned priorities. Join the Mosaic Internaitonal Conversation Community for a discussion of the responsibility of society as a whole to rethink what and how we spend our money when there are so many needs that go unmet. How can we invest millions of dollars into improving the quality of life for the select few who can afford options then drop our eyes and cover our ears to the sufferings and inadequate conditions of those living in poverty?

All across America, there are examples of how this country values things and people differently. In Indianapolis, we have a couple of prime examples of how the attraction of financial gain (which is not al bad thing in and of itself) can lead us to misplaced community values and priorities.

  1. We will tear down the RCA Dome and build a more spacious convention center.
  2. We will spend millions of dollars on a downtown cultural walking trail for persons living and working downtown.

Yet we can not come up with money to create affordable housing, shelter the homeless, build quality schools, feed the hungry or ensure that uninsured persons have healthcare. Aren’t these quality of life issues as well? What will it take to shift our community priorities to use the abundance of our city in more meaningful ways?

Participation Fee: $5.00. Meals ordered from menu.
