October 5 — “Burma Beautiful/Burma Brutal: Images and Ideas from a Country on the Edge”

An Evening Inspired by Current Events: Provocate presents Multi-media displays of videos & pictures from Burma, an opportunity for informal discussions with artists, activists, academics … and with Burmese refugees who have made Indiana home.

When: Friday, October 5, 6:00-9:00 PM
Where: The Harrison Center for the Arts 1505 North Delaware Indianapolis 46202

Attend the discussion of Burma in Crisis at the International Center on October 4 and you’ll learn that Indiana is one of the most important states for Burma right now … and Burma is one of the most important parts of the world for Indiana. Friday October 5 you can see that it is more than the growing and vibrant population of refugees from Burma residing in Indianapolis, more than the Burmese democrats rewriting the politics of the country from Bloomington. Many ordinary Hoosiers — artists, activists, filmmakers — are traveling to Burma to record the beauty of the country and its poeple … and the difficulties of life the corrupt and brutal military government has given to its subjects.

This promises to be a very special evening in the Underground of the Harrison Center for the Arts. Four sets of projectors with images and videos from Burma, clusters of Burmese dissidents and refugees, twenty-somethings who are making a documentary exposing the 21st century slavery generated by poverty and despair … you need a pretty good excuse to skip this event!

Featured at the Harrison Center will be:

  • Photos and art from Burma by Indianapolis artist Jude Odell, who used her “Creative Renewal Fellowship” to travel throughout Burma, recording every day life and collecting artworks.
  • Images from “The Sold Project,” a documentary in production by Indiana 20-somethings exposing the human cost of sex slavery in Burma
  • Photos from refugees camps on the Burmese-Thai border by ***** ******, an Indianapolis photo-journalist who got her start with Y-Press … see the preliminary report Emily’s team did on “Overcoming Obstacles, Creating Opportunities: Youth Perspectives from the Thai-Burmese Border
  • Video montage of current street protests by GeoPol analyst Pedro Cardoso along with a discussion of the difficulties of despots closing off their countries from the world in the 21st century
  • Images from Mae La refugee camp, where Burmese now in Indiana spent many years
  • Burmese scholars and dissidents from IU’s Center for Constitutional Democracy in Pluralist Societies, who are drafting a constitution for a democratic Burma
  • Members of the Chin and Karen ethnic minorities from Burma now in Indianapolis
