November 17 — Gathering the Stories of Everyday Heroes

“I remember when….” How many times have you heard a loved one start a sentence like this? Let’s assume you don’t doze off … Have you regretted not recording those words and preserving them for posterity? Regret no more.

When: Saturday, November 17, 2:00 PM - 4:00 PM
Where: Indiana History Center 450 W. Ohio St., Indianapolis, IN 46202

This workshop is part if Spirit & Place. It’s free and open to the public, but seating is limited. Pre-register by November 12 by calling 317-233-5659 or e-mail ekelley@indianahistory.org.

To capture the tales of everyday heroes, especially from those who lived during World War II, is to honor their stories of sacrifice and generosity. Learn the ABCs of how to gather, record, and preserve family stories in this oral history workshop led by Indiana Historical Society staff members:

  • Paul Brockman is the IHS Director of Manuscript and Visual Collections and has extensive insight into the WWII collections held by the IHS. Paul has processed the Doug Clanin WW II collection that contains 350+ oral histories and has also written WWII-related articles on the USS Indianapolis and Ernie Pyle.
  • Steve Haller is the Indiana Historical Society’s Senior Director of Collections. He has been with the IHS since 2004 and prior to his position at the Society, Steve worked for the Colonial Williamsburg Foundation where, among other duties, he directed an oral history project which recorded the memories of WWII veterans and others who experienced events of the 1930s-50s.

Related information will be available on the extensive WWII oral history and manuscript collections of the Indiana Historical Society, the Veteran’s History Project, and “THE WAR,” a new PBS series by Ken Burns.

If this sounds interesting … Attend the viewing of clips from THE WAR November 14.
