Roman Art from the Louvre takes you back 2,000 years to the height of the Roman Empire and features monumental works depicting Roman public and private life. See relief sculptures, busts of prominent Roman leaders, statues of emperors, imperial jewelry, statues of Roman goddesses, portraits of actors and theatrical masks, military items, urns and other ritual objects, and household items found at Pompeii and Herculaneum.
A ton of important events are scheduled around this exhibit. You can find them by visiting www.theromansarecoming.com. Provocate is particularly intrigued by talks on “Art for Propaganda, Art for Subversion in Imperial Rome” October 11; one of the exhibit’s curators explaining legal aspects in “Why’s there a statute in the freezer?” October 18; a discussion of “The “Art” of Building an Empire” October 25; and IMA head Maxwell Anderson’s talk about provenance in international art and antiquities November 12.
