New Faces at the Crossroads describes recent immigration patterns that have brought a fascinating diversity to enhance and enrich our communities. Until very recently, most of the foreign-born settlers in Indiana came from Europe. Today, however, many of the newest residents are coming from all over the globe, from such places as the Congo, India, Mexico, or Bulgaria.

Noted photographer Jeffrey Wolin beautifully illustrates our newfound universal diversity through 30 full-page, inventive and appealing photographs of new or relatively new immigrants, accompanied by profiles that reveal the many reasons for our growth in immigration. Some of his photos in this book, in a large-size format, will grace the new Indianapolis International Airport terminal.

Helping to portray the look of today’s central Indiana is the book’s writer, John Sherman, who provides, in a very readable format, a multitude of statistics, facts, and anecdotal information culled from dozens of interviews and extensive secondary research.

Both the photographer and the writer, themselves residents of central Indiana, draw on their own extensive international experiences to demonstrate that central Indiana is no longer just the Crossroads of America. It is the crossroads of the world.

John and Jeffrey will be at the book release party, as will many of the subjects of the photos. You can buy signed copies of the book at the party, or pre-order your copy here.

If this sounds interesting, check out … The International Festival November 15-18 lets you see for yourself what today’s immigration looks like. There are a lot of events this fall that Provocate calls “Crossing Borders” (since immigrants don’t always move here and stay rooted … they cross back and forth, and thus provide both communities with crucial linkages). A few events that seem particularly essential: The film by Latino students about their educational challenges, “Loz Invenzivlez: Our Invincible Youth” on November 3; “Sharing the Journey: Immigrants’ Stories” on November 13; and perhaps most important, the very ambitious event Provocate is organizing with other grous on November 17, “Indiana Opens to the World: Making a Map, Seeing the Connections.”
