November 14 — Covenant: Scenes From an African American Church
When the Jewish American photographer Tyagan Miller began to document the life of Covenant Baptist Church on the city’s near west side, he knew little about the world he would encounter. The congregation generously opened their hearts and lives to him, resulting in a stunning photo essay of 93 black-and-white images that document black culture and religious belief.
When: Wednesday, November 14, 2007 7:00 PM - 8:30 PM
Where: Indiana State Museum 650 West Washington Street, Indianapolis, IN 46219
This is a Spirit & Place event
Tyagan Miller’s documentary, portrait, and fine art photography has focused on issues of race, religion, at-risk youth, aging, migrant labor, landscape, combat veterans, and PTSD. Published in 2000, his book Twilight in Arcadia chronicles a year of tobacco growing and undocumented migrant labor in the American Midwest. Covenant: Scenes from an African American Church, his latest book, interprets the life of an inner city African American church congregation. An earlier compilation of these photographs was the subject of an exhibit at the Indianapolis Museum of Art, as part of a Polis Center project on religion and urban culture. Miller writes, “I hope that thoughtful viewers of every race, culture, and religious perspective will recognize in Covenant a portrayal of their own irresistible determination to discover meaning in the often harsh landscape of living and the enduring hope for a better life.” Join Miller for a discussion of the images and documentary process. Q&A and book-signing will follow. Admission is free. Presented by the Indiana State Museum and The Polis Center, IUPUI.
