November 13 — Spiritual Giving and Receiving: An Interfaith Peace-Prayer Service

This interfaith worship service will feature prayers for peace from the perspectives of American Indian, Baha’i, Buddhism, Christianity, Hinduism, Jainism, Judaism, Islam, Sikhism, and Unitarian Universalism.

When: Tuesday, November 13, 2007 7:30 PM - 9:00 PM
Where: Carmelite Monastery 2500 Cold Spring Rd., Indianapolis, IN 46222

Presenters from each tradition will raise their voices in common worship through songs, meditations, poems, or stories, and the Marian College Chamber Singers will perform. Keynote speaker Dr. Lawrence H. Gerstein, director of the Center of Peace and Conflict Studies at Ball State and president of the International Tibet Independence Movement, will share traditions from his Buddhist faith. Enjoy refreshments and conversation after the service.

Admission is free. Presented by Carmelites of Indianapolis and Marian College.

The Carmelites of Indianapolis are an intriguing example of how to balance contemplative withdrawal from the world with active engagement in change. Living cloistered in a life of prayer, silence, and solitude on Cold Spring Road, the Sisters of the monastery also have an award-winning website — www.praythenews.com — where they select local, national, and global problems that require their spiritual attention. Their analyses are sharp and insightful, spiritual and humane. The monastery is one of the state’s great architectural treasures.

Lawrence Gerstein is professor of psychology and director of the Center of Peace and Conflict Studies at Ball State University. He is also the director of the doctoral program in Counseling Psychology at Ball State. His expertise is in community, peace, and family psychology, consultation, and research methodology. He is president of the International Tibet Independence Movement (www.rangzen.org); an organization he co-founded with His Holiness The Dalai Lama’s oldest brother, Taktser Rinpoche. Gerstein has been a student of Buddhism for over 40 years.
