November 10 — Hidden in Plain Sight: Discovering Community Treasures

Discover treasures that are “hidden in plain sight” with the people of the Mapleton-Fall Creek community, the members of Broadway United Methodist Church, and members of The Zawadi Exchange. This coffeehouse atmosphere will highlight both the visual and performing arts, including poets, jazz musicians, African drumming, Capoeira (an African form of martial arts), and more.

When: Saturday, November 10, 2007 7:00 PM - 9:30 PM
Where: Broadway United Methodist Church 609 E. 29th St., Indianapolis, IN 46205

Between “sets,” participants will enjoy food and discuss what generous living looks like, how to recognize it, and how to live more generously.

The Zawadi Exchange (”Zawadi” means “gift” in Swahili) is the “brain-child” of Broadway Church and the Mapleton-Fall Creek CDC, and is staffed by De’Amon Harges and Marc McAleavey. The mission of Zawadi Exchange is to go into the neighborhood, having conversations and searching for people’s gifts and talents, their hopes and dreams and the things they are willing to act upon. That done, the Zawadi Exchange connects people with similar interests together to see what might come out of the mix. Through these conversations and connections, the Zawadi Exchange has discovered many artists - hidden treasure! Says NUVO:

Some intriguing possibilities have arisen from the Zawadi Exchange so far. A group of women calling themselves the Mapleton-Fall Creek DAMES has begun tackling economic development and housing issues in the neighborhood. A young mother has gained support for the in-home tutoring she already provides. A man who has the trust of drug users and non-users alike is planning to start a street-level rehab program.

Admission is free. Presented by Broadway United Methodist Church, Mapleton-Fall Creek Development Corporation, Starbucks / Magic Johnson Urban Coffee Opportunities, and The Zawadi Exchange.
