October 31 — Smart and highly competitive debaters guide us through the challenges of privatization of government services
Privatization narrowly refers to the shifting of service from the public to the private sector. A broader definition would include a wide range of public-private partnerships. Some citizens worry that we are indiscriminately handing over control of social services to private enterprise, resulting in degraded services and private profiteering. How can we look at this issue from two positions? Through a debate! Featured will be students from Cathedral Students, under the tutelage of Judie Ney, Cathedral High School’s Debate Teacher.
When: Wednesday October 31, 11:00-11:50 AM; then lunch; then a chance for less formal discussion with the kids
Where: Where: North United Methodist Church, 3808 N. Meridian St. Indianapolis
The Mid-North Shepherd Center serves older adults, but opens its events to everyone. You should stay for lunch, which is at noon. Bring a few bucks for lunch, but the talk is free.
The Great Decisions Domestic Series is presented by the Mid-North Shepherd Center. This fall, it focuses on how Indianapolis will confront the challenges associated with its revitalization and get comfortable in its new skin balancing traditional values with world class stature. The series features seven speakers with widely different expertise– seven unique opportunities to have a conversation with the people shaping the future of Central Indiana. Questions? Instead of listening to a venerable member of local government tell us about the pros and cons of privatization, come hear the debate team from Cathedral High School approach the topic in a dynamic format. Gain clarity about your own position while learning how the issue is seen by the next generation of business people and service providers. Bonus: Start your day with a mentally engaging debate and see how it focuses your efforts in successive endeavors.
